Breast enlargement re-do, or the so-called revision surgery is an extra surgery needed after the initial breast augmentation operation. There are few reasons why a patients could consider redoing their breast augmentation and seek revision surgery. This happened usually where the breasts have changed due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, then the patient doesn’t like the original breast shape anymore. Usually in that case, the upper half of the breast doesn’t have enough fullness and the implant seems not where it should be. Sometimes the implants are simply malpositioned, sliding off to one side. And in some cases, the patient may simply no longer want an implant.

Patients who come to see us at the Manchester Cosmetic Centre requesting breast re-augmentation or simply revision tend to be frustrated by a result that’s not what they expected. In some cases, they do even believe that they weren’t fully informed about the pros and cons of implants.

The Waterfall Deformity, what is it?

The waterfall deformity or the so-called “Snoopy” deformity is actually a common complication after breast enhancement surgery using textured silicone implants. It is often seen when the silicone implants have been placed under the pectoral muscle and especially when you already have got enough breast tissue, then your own breast tissue will start to droop and descend over the muscle giving the impression as if your implants are kept in a high position due to the muscle effect and your breast tissue has dropped. This produces a very typical look of a “double bubble”, with the upper fullness being due to the implant and the muscle and the lower due to your breast tissue that has dropped.

So does Dr Mounir Plastic Surgeon correct the double bubble deformity or the so-called water-fall deformity?

There are different techniques to correct this issue:

The first way involves replacing the implants combined with capsulectomy (removal of the capsule that surrounds the implant) and changing the round implant with an anatomical implant. However, this is very tricky option because the outcome of this corrective surgery will depend the quality of the breast tissue and if the sagginess is minimal and also if it is unlikely that the patient will experience more drop in the future. Dr Mounir will never this option to a women who is planning to have more children for example.

The second and the most efficient method would involve lifting of the breast tissue to a higher position so that the breast cover perfectly of the implant. Dr Mounir does usually replace the implants to avoid the biofilm formation and reduce the risk of capsular contracture.

Both of these techniques can be performed in a day case surgery and will take anywhere between one to 2 hours to perform. Generally, patients who undergo this surgery would plan to be off work for two weeks and look to reduce their physical activity for about 6 weeks.
