Silicone breast implants and the risk of autoimmune disorders

A Close look at the 2018 study from Israel

The author of the study starts by explaining that Silicones are polymeric compounds that are used for many purposes such as breast and joint implants, testicular prostheses, intraocular lenses, suprapubic catheters, artificial cardiac valves, hydrocephalus shunts and others.

Effectively silicone implants were introduced in 1962 and, since then, have been implanted in millions of women in the world.

Then the author makes a very interesting observation by saying that the silicone as product is becoming very controversial because of the various immunological effects that have been reported. They then make the association between the gel-bleed which the migrate of the silicone gel outside the outer intact shell with autoimmune disease.

They explained that based on the animal studies, the Silicon-containing particles that are then captured by macrophages have been shown to trigger an imbalance of regulatory T cells, responder T cells and Th17 cells, which would explain the inflammatory reaction and the autoimmune disease.

In conclusion, their data found an association between having breast implants and a higher likelihood of being diagnosed with various autoimmune/rheumatic disorder. Hence, in their cross-sectional study, they aimed to evaluate the association between breast silicone implants and the most clinically relevant autoimmune/rheumatic disorders by performing a ‘real-world’ analysis using the computerized databases of the second largest health maintenance organization (HMO) in Israel.
