WHAT NOT TO DO BEFORE YOUR LIPOSUCTION

Posted by Dr. Abel Mounir

Liposuction procedure, has become widely popular. In fact Liposuction procedure was the second most performed procedure in 2018.

Of the more than 2 million aesthetic surgical procedures performed in 2018, the top 5 were:

  1. Breast augmentation (313,735)

  2. Liposuction (258,558 procedures)

  3. Nose reshaping (213,780 procedures)

  4. Eyelid surgery (206,529 procedures)

  5. Tummy tuck (130,081 procedures)

Unfortunately, the fat removal procedure is actually treated like a routine procedure. Even though liposuction is to some certain extent considered as safe and effective for the right patient, it still be regarded as a major operation that is associated with risks and complications.

When you are planning to proceed with liposuction, it is important then to respect your surgeon’s recommendations in order to reduce the risks and prepare adequately your recovery period.

Follow these steps:

MAKE SURE THAT YOU DISCLOSE ALL YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY

During your initial consultation, you’ll meet with Dr Abel Mounir Manchester Plastic surgeon for a fat removal and body reshaping consultation. He will be asking you many questions about your past medical history and your health status and especially your past surgical experiences. It is important that you answer these questions as correctly as possible and with as many details as possible. If you do decide not to disclose any information you will put yourself at risk and you will be refused treatment. Without a complete medical summary from your GP, Dr Mounir won’t be able to assess you adequately and prepare your surgery efficiently. Therefore, you should protect yourself from unnecessary complications by being very honest during your consultation.

AVOID HARMFUL MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY

Dr Mounir will advise you to stop some medications, supplements, and even certain vitamins that can increase the risk of bleeding and/or poor healing, among others.

Dr Mounir will insist that two weeks before your liposuction procedure, you should not take aspirin, ibuprofen, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs vitamin E, some birth control medications. Please ask questions if you are not sure. Remember that Dr Mounir is responsible for your safety before during and after the surgery.

STOP SMOKING BEFORE YOUR SURGERY

It is a fact that nicotine before any surgery can increase your risks for delayed healing, and other anesthetic complications. Dr Mounir will make you sign a disclaimer to make it clear to you that you should stop smoking at least 6 weeks before to your liposuction surgery and continue to avoid smoking for at least two weeks after your operation. Smoking can cause a vasoconstriction (reduce blood flow) through the circulatory system, which would restrict the body’s ability to heal during your critical post-operative recovery.

YOU SHOULD ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT TARGET BEFORE THE SURGERY

After your initial liposuction consultation and discussion with Dr Mounir is over and you may be tempted to lose a few pounds to improve your cosmetic outcome. However, losing weight just before your surgery could have a negative effect on your final outcome, especially if you have lost a lot of weight. Avoid crash diets, crash diets include the juice diet, the 7-day detox diet, the military diet and the infamous keto diet. The issue with these types of diets is that there is a high risk of gaining back your weight after surgery very quick and this will affect you mentally.

SO, WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

Try to avoid the followings things:

  • Shaving. Don’t shave the surgical site which is the area where you want the liposuction to be performed. Shaving could lead to ingrown hairs after surgery and a potential infection.

  • Tight clothing. Avoid coming to the hospital in very tight or uncomfortable clothing. You need to be as comfortable as possible when you travel back home after your discharge.

  • Driving yourself to surgery. You need someone to drive you to and from the hospital. Please be aware that you will still have the effect of the anesthesia and you are not allowed to drive.

PLAN YOUR LIPOSUCTION WITH A GMC REGISTRED PLASTIC SURGEON

For a safe liposuction and in order to achieve a good result, it’s essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Contact the Manchester Cosmetic Centre to book your consultation today. Dr Mounir is a fully trained plastic surgeon who is Board Certified by the German Board of Plastic Surgeons and he will be happy to walk you through what you should expect from Liposuction procedure or any other surgery that might address your areas of concern.
